Urbana School District teacher named to USA Today All-USA teacher team
Flossie Wiley Elementary School teacher Marcy Vancil has been named to the 8th Annual USA Today All-USA Teacher Team, representing the country's outstanding teachers. A total of 23 teachers have been named to the USA Today honor roll—19 individuals and one team consisting of four educators.
Vancil, who teaches third grade at Wiley School, has been with the Urbana School District since 1974. Throughout her career in Urbana schools, she has taught primary grades at Wiley, Yankee Ridge Elementary School, and Prairie School. She has been a Wiley teacher since the 1990/91 school year.
A panel of judges from National Middle School Association, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, National Association of Secondary School Principals, American Council on Education, and former honorees of the USA teacher recognition selects the annual list of All-USA Teachers from nominees across the country. They are chosen based upon their ability to meet the needs of their students.
Vancil has also been recognized as an Illinois State Board of Education “Those Who Excel” educator with an excellent rating, a Disney American Teacher honoree, and “Outstanding Educator” by the Champaign and Ford Counties Regional Office of Education.
She attended Thomas Metcalf (Laboratory) School at Illinois State University and graduated from University High School, Normal. She earned her bachelor's degree in elementary/early childhood education from Southern Illinois University, completed her student teaching assignment at the Kirkstyle Primary School, Kilmarnock, Scotland, earned a master's degree in curriculum and instruction at the University of Illinois, and achieved National Board Certification in 1998.
Vancil also serves on the Illinois State University Clinical Experience Program Development Team, the University of Illinois Advisory Preservice Program, and as a cooperating teacher for ISU, UI, Eastern Illinois University and Parkland College. Her community service work includes the NAACP and the Champaign Children's Museum.
