Cal Hubbard

Anyone remotely associated with U-High knows Cal Hubbard.  They know him as a teacher, a coach, a parent, and a loyal alumnus.

It is safe to say that no other individual has had as profound an effect on basketball at U-High.  As a player, Cal’s impact was very significant.  As a coach, his impact has been phenomenal.  Fans throughout Illinois know about the 12 Conference and Regional championships, 8 Sectional championships, 9 Super-sectional appearances, 6 Elite Eight appearances, and three top three finishes in the State Tournament, including a Championship in 1995.   The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association named Cal Coach of the Year in 1995.  Cal’s teams have won well over 70 percent of their games at U-High.

Cal has also led the girl’s golf team to 7 Conference and 4 Regional championships, and 4 State Tournament appearances.  Cal has also been a successful baseball coach.

His faculty colleagues at U-High greatly respect Cal, where he teaches physical education and social sciences.  Cal has been a teacher for nearly thirty years, and has been at U-High since 1989.  Cal has published coaching manuals and helped compile records and statistics on U-High Basketball dating back to 1911.  He has operated a successful summer basketball camp for many years.

Cal has been married to Vivian (Collie) Hubbard (Class of 1967).  They have three sons, Neal (Class of 1992), Nathan (Class of 1995) and Seth (Class of 1999) all of whom enjoyed basketball success at U-High under their Dad.  Cal’s loyalty and commitment to U-High is probably best demonstrated by the fact that, in spite of his tremendous coaching success, he has stayed here and continues to have a positive influence on the lives of his students and players.
