With 7 seniors leaving from last year’s wrestling team, Coach Troll now has to lead a young, but talented Pioneer team. “Depth hurts,” Troll said. “We’re split in half between experienced versus non-experienced wrestlers. We have several first years and then we also have state qualifiers in the same room.” The returning Pioneers are junior Evan Weaver who was a State Qualifier last season, senior Kyle Olson, a 30 match winner; junior Mitchell Dearing and senior Mikel Zaitzeff, both of whom were 20+ match winners last season. Also returning is senior Michael Kull who is expected to be a starter for the first time this year. “Kull’s always been 2nd,” says Troll. “Now he gets his chance. I’m very excited to watch how he does this year.” Kull said he is looking forward to this year’s season. “I’m excited about this year’s wrestling season because it is my senior year, and I get to be a leader as well,” Kull said. The wrestling team opens their season with a meet in Pekin against Pekin and Midwest Central on November 23rd. They will face top 3A competition at the BHS Quad and the Edwardsville Multi Dual, even before the heart of the schedule kicks off with the Intercity meet at Normal West on December 14th. “They have been working their tails off,” Coach Troll said, “a sign of good things to come this season, especially since they have high expectations for themselves.”Seniors Michael Kull and Mikel Zaitzeff prepare for their upcoming season.
