P.E. takes toll on students

P.E. has always been a competitive activity during the school day where students can let off some energy. However, injuries that occur during this class are unavoidable.

Senior Emily Showers was injured while playing soccer in the gym earlier this year, which resulted in having to receive stitches near her right eye.

Showers said that the only lasting consequence will be a small scar, but the injury could have been avoided by playing in a better area.

“I don’t think we should be playing soccer inside,” Showers said.

With the large gym back in use, students will have more room to move around in, rather than the limited area in the small gym.

Senior Emily Hahn injured her thumb while playing speedball in the large gym, but she feels that injuries can happen anywhere.

“Injuries can happen whenever or wherever, that’s just one of the risks you take,” Hahn said.

P.E. teacher Lester Hampton feels that injuries are unavoidable in activities, but can be limited by taking precautions.

“I think the biggest way to prevent injuries would be to practice safety,” Hampton said.
