The pouring rain was enough to stop the meet at NCHS on Friday, but it was not enough to keep the U-High track team from making a remarkable effort. The meet was finally cancelled before the 200 meter and 4x400 meter relay, but not before the 2-milers ran in the downpour. Freshman Ryan Rutherford who competed in the 3,200 meter run said it was a hard race to run because of the strong wind and heavy rain. “There was one side of the track where you had to put your head down it was so bad. It was hard to see,” Rutherford said. Rutherford and teammate Nick Geyer, who ran in the race with him, didn’t really have a strategy. “You couldn’t really do anything about the weather except try your hardest,” Rutherford said. All seven layers of sophomore Connor Cross’ clothes were soaked through by the time the meet was cancelled. He felt the 2-mile runners did well despite the terrible condition. “When they got done they looked like they had just stepped out of the shower,” Cross said. The boys’ team placed third out of seven teams with 84 points scored. Senior Scott Blair placed first in the discus with a throw of 142’5’’, and fellow senior Kevin Forde won the mile in 4 minutes and 40 seconds. Junior Iketchi Nnamani won the high jump with 6’0’’. The girls’ team placed fourth out of nine teams scoring a total of 60 points. Freshman Emily Clay won the pole vault with a height of 10’6’’ and junior Jordan Bond set a meet record in the triple jump with a jump of 33’8.75’’.
