Carrying
on from Chapter 17, King Leodegrance and his people were still being under
attacked by King Rience and his men of 10,000 in the country of Cameliard.
King Arthur, King Ban, and King Bors and their 20,000 men traveled six days
to Cameliard to rescue King Leodegrance from the tyranny of King Rience and
his men. After they have done so, King Leodegrance threw a celebration for
them to thank them of their great goodness. It was at this celebration where
Arthur had the first sight of King Leodegrance’s daughter, Guenever, and
fell in love. Shortly after, they got married.
After the
wedding, King Ban and King Bors were prepared to depart from Arthur and go
back to their lands because it was being under attacked by their enemy King
Claudas. Arthur insisted that he went with them.
But the
kings said, “No, you should not come at this time for you still have much to
do in these lands. So we will depart because you have already taught us so
much. We are now good knights and can withstand against King Claudas. If we
need you, we will send for you. If you are in need, send for us and we will
be quick.”
Then
Merlin foresaw the future and said to Ban and Bors, “You won’t need Arthur
for aid in war until in a year or two. One day, the eleven kings will die by
two knights of great might and powers who will come for you. Their names are
Balin le Savage, and
Balan, his brother. But Arthur will revenge you of your enemies just as you
have done for him.”
Turning
back to the eleven kings, they had just got out of battle and had returned
to the city that King Uriens ruled. There, they refreshed themselves, healed
their wounds and sorrowed for those who had died in battle. Then a messenger
came and told them that the Saracens, a group of 40,000, were coming into
their lands and burning and destroying anything and anyone in their path
without a show of mercy. They had even blocked the castle of Wandesborow.
After hearing this news, the eleven kings had wished that they hadn’t
attacked against Arthur as they had done so that he and his men could come
and defend them from the Saracens.
Seeing it
as their only option, they came up with a plan to protect the borders of
Cornwall, Whales, and North from the Saracens. To get the job done, they
divided the kings to guard from different cities. They put King Idres in the
City of Nauntes in Britain with 4,000 men in arms to watch the water and the
land. Then they placed King Nentres of Garlot in the city of Windesan with
4,000 knights to watch while on water and on land. They also
sent more than 8,000 men of war to strengthen the fortresses in the marches
of Cornwall and put more knights in all the marches of Wales and Scotland.
These men were now all well armed and well prepared for what will become the
Battle of Bedegraine in the next chapter.
