The Great Wizard, named Merlin saved King Arthur’s life, by setting a spell on
Pellinore, causing him to fall asleep, but mistakenly Arthur believes that
Merlin has killed Pellinore until he is filled in with all of the correct
information.
In the beginning of the chapter, Merlin
is in a major attempt to keep
him from seeing Arthur. He is talking to Pellinore about Arthur, being King. All of
a sudden, Merlin sets a spell on
Pellinore that puts him
into a deep sleep. After Merlin takes this action he takes Arthur away with him,
while trying to explain to Arthur that if he had not taken him away Pellinore
would have killed him. Arthur had nothing against Pellinore at all. All Arthur
did was talk about how good of a king Pellinore was, and how nice he was to
everyone. Arthur’s first reaction to Merlin was how horrible he was because he
thought so highly about Pellinore. At this point in time, Arthur is upset at
Merlin because he believes that Merlin has killed Pellinore. During this time of
arguing Merlin takes his time and explains everything very thoroughly to Arthur.
For instance, some of the things that Merlin told
King Arthur
were that he did not kill Pellinore; he just put him to sleep for a few hours.
After that long vivid explanation he also explains that Pellinore would have
killed him if Merlin did not come and save his life. Next, not only does Merlin
explain to Arthur about Pellinore, but he also gives Arthur unknown information
about Pellinore. Merlin, the wizard states that Pellinore will have 2 sons,
named
Percival
of Wales and Lamerane of Wales. Merlin also states that Pellinore should
be able to foretell the name of Arthur’s upcoming and
future son. This
brought confusion over Arthur and he did not know where to turn. He was being
told one thing from one person, that he believed he could trust, and then Merlin
tries to tell him a different side. This is said to lead to all of destruction.
