King Arthur's Feast |
|
|
Many kings of many cities gathered and brought
hundreds of knights to eat at a great feast in honor of the coronation
of King Arthur. Arthur was happy for their coming and sent the kings
gifts that were coming from Lothian and of Orkney, Gore, Garlot,
Scotland, and Carados but the kings denied his gifts because they didn’t
think Arthur was fit for a king. They thought he was too young, just a
“beardless boy” and thought he was too low in society. Instead, the
kings would bring their knights to fight against Arthur’s. Arthur and
his knights waited for 15 days.
On the 15th day, Merlin
arrived. The Kings asked him, “For what cause is that boy Arthur made
your king?” and Merlin replied, “ Sirs, I shall tell you the cause, for
is King Uther Pendragon’s son, born in wedlock, gotten on
Igraine, the duke’s wife of Tingail.” and explained to the kings and
knights of other cities that Arthur was the son of
King Uther Pendragon. Some kings accepted Arthur as a king after
Merlin’s explanation and others laughed at him.
Merlin then went to speak to Arthur to tell him to go speak to the
other Kings and “fear him not, but come out bodily and speak with them,
and spare them not, but answer them as their king and chieftain; for ye
shall overcome them all, whether they will or nill.”
