Sir Ector and Sir Gawaine pass a fretful
night. Unbeknownst to them, they were actually experiencing the same
dream. The dream is about
Sir Launcelot jumping on two horses. Later in the dream,
Sir Launcelot
comes to a well, and just before he drinks from it, the water disappears. Sir Launcelot then leaves the well and rides a horse to a rich man’s house.
When both Sir Ector and Sir Gawaine
wake up, they realize they had the same
dream. They are amazed at this coincidence. As they talk, a hand with a
candle floats in front of them and vanishes into a
chapel. Then they hear a
voice which tells them that they may not experience the adventures of the
Sangreal.
Ector and
Gawaine decide to seek a hermit to explain all of the visions and voices.
Towards the end, they decide to go to a
valley. Upon the way, they meet a knight
and Sir Gawaine challenges the knight to a
joust. The other knight is badly
wounded and asks to be taken to the
abbey. Sir Gawaine takes Uwaine les Avoutres
to the
abbey, pulls the rest of the spear out, and learns that the other knight is
a member of Sir Arthur's court. Just before Uwaine les Avoutres dies, he says he also
was seeking the
Sangreal.
