Book Two: The Ballad of Balin and Balan

Chapter Four: How Merlin Told the Adventure of this Damsel.

Merlin

There was a haughty and proud knight, Lanceor, who was the son of the King of Ireland. Lanceor thought that he was the best knight and he was very envious towards Balin for achieving the sword. Lanceor had asked King Arthur if he could go out searching after Balin and to get revenge for his killing the Lady of the Lake.

“Do your best,” said Arthur, “I am angry with Balin, despite what he had done to the Lady of the Lake, and to me and my court.”

Then Lanceor returned to his lodgings to get ready. As Lanceor was off getting ready to go, Merlin came into King Arthur’s Court. There Merlin was told about the adventure of the sword and the death of the Lady of the Lake.

“Now I shall tell you,” Merlin said, “This same women who stood here, that brought the sword to your court, I will tell you the reason exactly that she came. That women was the falsest women that lives.”

“This cannot be so,” the people in King Arthur’s court replied.

“She had a brother, an honest man, a good knight of great skill. However, the women loved another knight, who was an unknown lover, and her brother met with this man and killed him. When this women had heard about the what her brother had done, she went to the Lady Lile of Avelion, and asked for her help, to avenge her own brother.”
