Sir
Lancelot, armorless, walked until he came to
Queen Guenever’s chamber.
He quietly slipped in and he and the Queen became physically engaged.
But as they were together, came
Sir Agravaine and
Sir Mordred with
twelve knights from the
Round Table. Loudly they cried, “Traitor knight,
Sir Launcelot du Lake, you are discovered.” All fourteen of them were
fully armed as if they were about to fight in a battle.
Sir Lancelot looked to Queen Guenever and said, “Is there any armor in
this chamber to cover my naked body? If so, give it to me and I will
fight my way out by the grace of God.
“Truly,” said the Queen, “I have no armor, shield, or sword. I fear
that our sweet love has come to an end. It sounds like there are many
knights who are no doubt fully armed, do not try and fight them all. If
caught, you would be slain and I would be burnt at the stake. If you
could escape, then you could come back and save me from the fire.”
Sir Agravaine and Sir Mordred continued to cry out, "Traitor knight,
come out of the queen’s chamber, you will not escape!”
Sir Lancelot took the Queen in his arms kissed her and said, “My love,
I am sorry I have put you in this situation; I have always loved you and
have never failed you since the first day
King Arthur made me a knight.
Pray for me to be quick and swift, but if I should be killed I promise
you that my nephew, Sir Bor, will rescue you from the fire.”
“But”, the Queen replied, “I would rather die than live without you.”
“Guenever”,
said Sir Lancelot, “I care for you more than myself, and I will fight my
way out or die trying, either way, I will see to it that you will live
on.”
