The
Damosel
and
Beaumains
left in the mourning and rode to a great forest. At the great forest was a
great river, and only one route across. Unfortunately, there were two
knights blocking their path. The damosel asked Beaumains if he would match
the knights or if he would coward away.
“I will
not turn away if there were six more” replied Beaumains. Then he took off
across the river, drawing his sword.
The
Knight met him in the middle of the river and they fought until Beaumains
hit him the head which cause him to fall off his horse and drown. Beaumains
then rode to the second knight who was waiting on land; they drew swords and
fought for a while. Beaumains finally defeated him by hitting his head and
cleaving
it between his shoulders; he then rode back to the damosel to help her cross
the river.
The
damosel replied to Beaumains actions by saying “it was fortune that you, a
kitchen
page,
defeated two knights. “The first knight’s horse stumbled and that is how he
fell off and drowned. The second one you luckily snuck behind to kill.”
Beaumains
replied, “You can say what you want but I trust God to serve I will not get
mad at what you said for I will win your heart.”
The
damosel continued her criticism by saying, “Being with you is a
misadventure. You can stop with the worship, for if you follow me you will
be slain.”
Ignoring
the criticism, Beamains replied “You can say what you want but wherever you
may go, I will follow.”
They
continued on their journey and ventured into a dangerous looking
atmosphere. The scenery was dark and everything was black in color.
Despite their fears they continued to advance.
