Book Nine: Sir Breunor and Other Tales

Chapter Sixteen

How King Arthur was brought into the Forest Perilous, and how Sir Tristram saved his life

Sir Tristram

King Arthur rode into the Forest Perilous with a lady named Annowre who was a sorceress . Annowre actually loved King Arthur, and tried to entice him. Arthur refuses though to make love to her and she rebels. She later reveals though her intent was to have Arthur slain because she could not have him herself.

Lady of the Lake appears and understands by her craft that it is possible that Arthur could be slain. She goes into the forest to find either Launcelot or Tristram to help Arthur from being slain. She rode on her horse until she finally found Tristram. She talked to him and they came to a conclusion that Tristram could help.

The Lady of the Lake and Tristram rode to a castle where they met two knights who were wrestling with Arthur. Tristram defeated them both and then came upon Arthur and Annowre. Annowre tried to kill Arthur before Tristam came but it was to late for her.  Arthur cut off Annowre’s head and was free. Tristram and Arthur rode to safety thereafter and left without a scratch.

Thereafter, they rode on their horse and Arthur asked Tristram what his name was, but he would not reveal it. After a while they met Sir Ector de Maris who did not know either of them. Ector wanted to joust with one of them and Tristram agreed to it. Tristam defeated him in the joust. Arthur again asked for his name, but Tristram rode off leaving Arthur and Sir Ector behind.
