The Robert Brome Award for Creative Writing
Awards & ScholarshipsEnglish Home

The Robert Brome Award for Creative Writing is an annual competition open to all graduating U-High seniors. Named for former playwright and U-High English teacher Robert Brome (d.1973), the award offers a cash prize of at least $50.00 and publication in the school literary magazine, Brome and Beyond. Entries are collected and collated by the U-High English department, then judged (with author names removed) by a panel of outside experts from ISU. Winners are announced at the Awards Assembly in May.

Entries are solicited all year, but the contest closes on the Tuesday after Spring Break each calendar year. Award entries should be original, unpublished, creative writing (poetry, short story, dramatic script, personal essay, etc.). See back issues of Brome and Beyond (the "Brome" section) for examples of prior submissions and winners. Click on the links in this paragraph for complete submission details and an on-line entry form. Hard copies of the information are available from the English office (Rm. 239) or the Counseling Center (Rm.233).
