Fannie Flagg's Bio

Fannie Flagg's writing and show business career began in the fifth grade, in her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, when she wrote and starred in a three-act comedy entitled "The Whoopee Girls," which caused quite a stir because it contained the word "martini." "I've always had a dry wit," Fannie explains.

At age nineteen, Fannie began writing and producing television specials and went on to distinguish herself as an actress and writer in television, film, and stage. Her first novel, Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man, spent ten weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Her second novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, was on the New York Times bestseller list for thirty-six weeks and was produced by Universal Studios as the feature film Fried Green Tomatoes. Fannie penned the script and won Academy Award and Writers Guild of America Award nominations for her adaptation. She narrated both her novels on audio tape and received a Grammy Award nomination for the best spoken word for Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. Fannie recently released The Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook. She lives in Montecito, California.
