Notice to Parents*****

Dear U-High Parent,                                                                                                                                     4 February 2009

On February 13th, your child will be attending a field trip in Chicago.  We will first attend an abridged performance of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, followed by an afternoon at the Science and Industry Museum.  The trip itinerary, including departure times and estimated arrival times, is included below.

Please note that due to the necessity of arriving on time and the difficulty of coordinating the movement of a large number of students, if your student misses the bus he/she will be unable to attend.  Additionally, the cost of this trip is non-refundable as we have already reserved and paid for your student’s seat based on the receipt of their payment.  The time given below is the departure time.  Busses will be loaded and ready to leave at the given time.

The costs paid for this field trip does not include lunch. Your child must bring sufficient funds to pay for lunch or must bring his/her lunch with them.  Navy Pier is a tourist spot; expect the cost of lunch to be above average.  The students will receive 50 minutes for lunch at the food court on the pier.  A few of the options available at the food court include America’s dog, Carnelli’s Deli, Greek Delight, King Wah Express, McDonald’s, and Connie’s Pizza.  Lunch will be supervised.

Lastly, please ensure that your student dresses appropriately both for the occasion and for the weather.  Attire need not be too formal; however, khaki pants and a nice shirt would be most appropriate.  It is likely that the weather in Chicago will be very cold.  Layering is the best option.

January 2009

Dear U-High Parent,

On Friday, February 13, 2009, our freshman class will be taking a field trip to Chicago to enjoy Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and an afternoon at the Science and Industry Museum.  The cost will be $25 and is due Wednesday, January 14th.  Any students who do not submit their money by this date will be unable to attend.  This twenty-five dollars covers the student’s admission fees to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, the Museum, and travel costs.  This fee does NOT include lunch.  Your student is responsible for bringing his/her lunch or sufficient funds to purchase lunch at Navy Pier.  Students will have one hour for lunch at the Pier.

This is a wonderful opportunity for your student to experience Shakespeare on the stage and to see some of Chicago.  Additionally, this field trip provides a wonderful opportunity for our program to emphasize its cross-curricular goals.  However, because of the need to present a final count to both the theater and the museum, we will not have any flexibility if your student does not get his/her funds in by the required date.

If you wish your student to participate, please have him/her return with $25 no later than Wednesday, January 14th.  Checks may be made out to University High School.   Please e-mail Amy Reiman (ahreima@ilstu.edu) or Brian Conant (btconan@ilstu.edu) with any questions or concerns.98

Sincerely,

**Extra Credit Book Group Information

Tuesday, NOVEMBER 18th at 3:15 will be our extra credit book discussion on The City of Ember

Currently, our location is set for the library, that may change as we near the actual date.  Listen for announcements.  Your ticket into the discussion is to bring at least FOUR QUALITY discussion questions (they need to be open ended, no yes/no questions).  Remember, this discussion is student-generated; meaning, everyone earns extra credit based on the quality of the discussion that you create.  I encourage students to go see the movie as the book/film comparison always makes for a good discussion.  A number of students have also encouraged the reading of the remaining books in the series and another book called The Giver.  Comparing books to other texts is always fascinating; no plot spoilers, please.

RE:  Greek Week Greek Feast Friday ($5)

This week our freshman will be participating in “Greek Week” and exciting cross-curricular tradition at University High School in which student explore ancient Greek culture from a variety of perspectives.  One of the important features of the week will be a number of guest lectures about Greek philosophy and culture.

Another exciting feature of the week will be the “Greek Field Day,” in which students will compete as teams in a number of Olympic inspired events on Friday.  Much like the Olympics students will be awarded prizes for these competitions.  Also, like in the ancient Olympics, we would like to follow our field day with a great Greek feast.

We are working with a local Greek restaurant to have lamb Gyros, drink  and fries delivered to school on Friday as our “Greek Feast,” and we invite all of our students to enjoy this special meal.  The cost of the “feast” will be $5.00 and students will receive one gyro, fries and something to drink.  Of course, students are not required to eat the meal, but because of the special nature of our field day, students will be eating lunch as a picnic and WILL NOT be permitted to buy a school lunch as they may normally otherwise do.  As such we would ask that students either bring their lunch or purchase the “Greek Feast” on Friday.

Again the cost of the meal is $5 and students can pay with cash or a check made out to University High School.  We would appreciate if students could submit their order for this meal by Wednesday morning so that we can communicate a complete order to our caterers.

Here is looking forward to a great Greek Week!
