Chapter 10: University Services

I. Professional Services  

A. Alumni Services, www.ilstu.edu/depts/alumni/GenInfo.html and Events.html

Parent Services, www.ilstu.edu/depts/studentlife/parent/  

Events and programs for Illinois State alumni and parents of Illinois State students are developed and coordinated through the staff of Alumni Services and Parent Services and their volunteer boards.  Major events include Homecoming, Parents Weekend, Alumni Awards Day, regional meetings elsewhere in Illinois and the nation, and special regional events.  They also publish newspapers for the two constituencies and offer travel and educational programs.  

B. Campus Technology Support Group, www.ilstu.edu/ctsg/

  1. Computer User Services, www.ilstu.edu/cus/
    Computer User Services provides Illinois State students, faculty, and staff with support services in the area of computing technologies.  

  2. Faculty Technology Support Services, www.ilstu.edu/ftss/
    Faculty Technology Support Services (formerly Instructional Technology) provides a full-service center to assist and support faculty and staff use of technology for instruction, research, and other professional objectives.  Their staff can help create and edit Web pages, PowerPoint presentations, multimedia, graphics, digital videos, and audio materials.  They also offer a variety of computer Short Courses each semester.  

  3. Technical Assistance
    Additional technical support is available through College of Education and Laboratory School personnel.    

C. Conferencing Unit, www.exu.ilstu.edu/cu/

The Conferencing Unit offers public service opportunities through the provision of non-credit courses, conferences, and management development programs.  Individuals seeking assistance to organize conferences or develop non-degree educational learning opportunities for targeted audiences should contact the Conferencing Unit.  

D. Office of Development, www.institutionadv.ilstu.edu/

Solicitation of private funding for the University Foundation and hence for the educational programs of Illinois State University is conducted by the staff of the Development Office.  Programs include special giving clubs, annual giving and pledge programs, corporate giving, and deferred gift (wills, bequests, insurance) programs.  

E. Environmental Health and Safety, www.oehs.ilstu.edu/

The Environmental Health and Safety Office maintains statistical records on employee accidents, University fires and mishaps, and job-related injuries and illnesses.  In addition, Environmental Health and Safety inspects all campus buildings to identify potential hazards and maintains an emergency communications and storm-warning-alert system.  

F. Grammar Hotline, Stevenson 401; phone 438-2345

Grammar Hotline is a University-sponsored service that provides employees with answers to questions about correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage.  

G. Office of Disability Concerns, www.ilstu.edu/depts/disabilityconcerns/

The Office of Disability Concerns helps both students and employees with handicapping conditions function as independently as possible.  The Office of Disability Concerns provides many services including, but not limited to, readers, interpreters, personal assistants, tutors, Braillists, and note-takers.  Employees who need Handicapped Services or who wish to volunteer to work should contact the Office of Disability Concerns.  

H. Illinois State Foundation, www.institutionadv.ilstu.edu/

The Foundation, a University-related non-profit corporation, has as its primary purpose the seeking and encouragement of private gifts to the University for its educational purposes.  The Foundation coordinates all fund-raising activities for the University and provides accounting and investment services for private funds.  Employees wishing to make contributions in the form of gifts, wills, bequests, or pledges should contact the Foundation Office.  Gifts may be earmarked for specific Laboratory School departments or programs.  

I. University High School Alumni Association, www.uhigh.ilstu.edu/alumni/

The alumni association acts as a fundraising arm for University High School.  The association publishes The Pioneer, provides support for planning class reunions, and maintains a file of alumni addresses.  

J. Libraries

Employees may use three University Libraries:  (1) Milner, the main library; (2) University High School Library; and (3) Zimmerman Library located at Thomas Metcalf School.  

Employees must present their Illinois State University identification cards at the circulation desks in order to check out materials.  Retired employees and spouses of current employees may apply for courtesy cards at the Circulation Desk, Floor 2, Milner Library.  Special employee services include on-line searches for abstracts and interlibrary loans.  See www.mlb.ilstu.edu/  

K. Mail Service, www.msc.ilstu.edu/

The University Mail Service makes pickups and deliveries daily.  Eight campus mailboxes are located on campus for employee use.  Each unit pays the postage for outgoing mail.  

L. Media Relations/News Service, www.mediarelations.ilstu.edu/ and University Communications, www.ilstu.edu/depts/ucom/index.shtml  

Media Relations/News Service assists employees in publicizing events and achievements.  University Communications provides editing and design services for publications which are intended primarily for off-campus audiences.  In addition, Media Relations/News Service publishes the Illinois State Report, a weekly news bulletin; and the Redbird I-Views, a sports publication.  

M. News HotLine; phone 438-8371

News HotLine is a daily-recorded update that covers weather forecasts, University activities, and local and national news of interest to the University community.  

N. Parking Services, 709 North Main Street

Employees must purchase parking decals in order to park in designated faculty/staff lots.  All parking information is contained in a parking regulations pamphlet available in the Parking Office.  A campus map is available at www.calendar.ilstu.edu/maps.taf  

O. Facilities Management, www.ppo.ilstu.edu/fs/welcome.asp

Besides regulating the use of University vehicles, Facilities Management provides:  (1) custodial services; (2) general maintenance and repair; (3) major and minor alterations and improvement; (4) moving and installation of heavy equipment; (5) horticulture services; (6) University key services; (7) utility services, such as heating and air conditioning changes; and (8) ballot box and voting booth service.  Additional information about the procedures for requesting these services may be obtained in the main office.  

P. University Police, Nelson Smith Building 105, www.ilstu.edu/depts/police

The University Police work with the local police to ensure safety of the members of the University community.  Employees should report all on-campus vehicle accidents, fires, crimes in progress, and violations of University regulations to the University Police:

Q. Printing Services, www.ilstu.edu/depts/ucom/print.shtml  

The University Printing Services maintains offices in three locations for copying materials:  (1) Nelson Smith Building, Room 2; (2) Rapid Print–Eastside, Old Union Building 116; and (3) Rapid Print–DeGarmo, Room 3.  The Printing Services Offices should be contacted for additional details.  

R. Radio Stations

WGLT, the University radio station, is an FM public radio station that broadcasts at a frequency of 89.1 (www.ilstu.edu/depts/wglt).  Z106, WZND broadcasts at a frequency of 106.1 FM stereo cable and is a student-run radio station (www.wznd.com/).  

S. Speech and Hearing Clinic, Fairchild Hall 211

The Speech and Hearing Clinic provides diagnosis and therapy for students and employes with speech and hearing problems.  

T. Telecommunications, www.tel.ilstu.edu/

In addition to the University telephone system, employees have access to special telephone services, including data sets, computerlinks, teletypewriters, and telelecturers.  The Telecommunications Office should be contacted for additional details.  

U. University-Owned Vehicle Service, Facilities Management, www.ppo.ilstu.edu/fs/workmgmt/fleet.asp

Some professional duties may necessitate that employees charter buses or use service vehicles or fleet cars.  Forms used to reserve fleet vehicles are available in the main office.

II. Wellness Program, Energy House, www.hr.ilstu.edu/Wellness.html

The Wellness Program encourages a healthy lifestyle for University employees through health education, assessment, and counseling.  A wellness representative is designated in each building to post information and respond to questions.
