The Environmental Science Award is given to that student who best exemplifies the qualities of Scholarship, Competency and Enthusiasm in the course of their studies in Environmental Science. 

Mr. Surma was a much loved science teacher and administrator at University High School for nearly twenty years.  He inspired many U-High students to pursue careers in science or medicine.  He taught Biology, Advanced Biology and Science Seminar. 

He left University High in 1995 to become assistant Superintendent of Schools in the Atlanta, Georgia area. He will be long remembered as a favorite teacher and friend.
