Pool Basics

Studies have shown that most people buy swimming pools for 3 different reasons: 1) to stay physically fit, 2) for show, and 3) for their children.  It is an undeniable fact that swimming regularly or even swimming only once in a while is very beneficial both physically and mentally.  Also, pools provide something for the entire family to do together, specifically the kids.  However, when one thinks of swimming pools in the sense of landscape architecture, we usually think of pools without anyone in them and with beautiful plants and landscaping around the pool.  The pool itself is filled with crystal clear water and sometimes has things like waterslides and fountains to keep the water moving.

Usually, we think of pools in two different styles: in ground and above ground.  In ground pools, like the ones above, look very stylish and natural in their environment.  When done correctly, they add to the value of the site, as well as the overall look and quality of the home.  Most in ground pools tend to be found in warmer, more mild climates where the variation in weather patterns tends to be very minimal and the temperature is consistently warm.  However, it is not uncommon to find them elsewhere as well.  Above ground pools are usually a little less money and are also easier to set up and build.
Contrary to common belief, swimming pools are relatively easy to maintain and keep looking nice.  Most of the maintenance and cleaning can take place while you are in the pool and the filters should do the rest.  Coverings for pools can be bought in all shapes and sizes and should be used when the weather gets severe or the pool is not being used for long periods of time.
In the accompanying pages, you can see the standard steps for the construction of an in ground pool, as well as numerous accessories and maintenance devices that will keep your pool looking great.
