The following is a list of deciduous trees that are able to be grown in USDA Hardiness Zone 5 (McLean County is located in Hardiness Zone 5a). This list is by no means comprehensive of all the trees capable of growing in Zone 5, but it does strive to provide a general overview of the various types of trees that can prosper in this zone. Red Maple (Acer rubrum) - The red maple comes in several varieties that vary mainly in height and necessary growing conditions. Every red maple features the characteristic red leaves in the fall.

River Birch (Betula nigra) - This tree has a creamy whit bark that begins to peel within the first few years. This provides for a beautiful look. The tree also provides a light shade and some privacy.

Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) - This is an excellent tree for
almost any area, as it is capable of growing in many soil types and is
resistant to pollution and hot and dry conditions. 
Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica) - Also known as the Sour Gum
or the Black Tupelo, this tree has a pyramidal shape that changes into an
oval shape as it matures. It is best known for its bright red leaves in
the autumn, which contrast nicely with its black bark. 
Sweet Gum (Liquidamber Styraciflua)
- This tree features star shaped leaves and a pyramidal shape that
broadens as it ages. 
European Beech (Fagus sylvatica) - This tree is excellent for
provinding dense shade and is easily transplanted because of its shallow
roots.
Yellowwood (Cladrastis lutea) - This tree requires more
maintenance than most, with pruning required to control the shape of
yellowwood's large spread. Owners are rewarded though by the beautiful
white flowers the tree produces every 2 to 3 years
Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) - A slow growing tree, the
sourwood has a pyramidal shape and bark with a checkerboard-like
appearance, due to its variations in color. 
Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) - Also known as the Lacebark Elm,
this tree is resistant to many diseases, the
lacebark elm grows to a maximum height of 50 feet and has an equally
expansive spread
