Acronyms
Acronyms can be used to abbreviate commonly used expressions when
possible. They are commonly seen in Internet chat rooms, but are also
sometimes used in e-mail messages. It should be remembered that messages
that are filled with acronyms can be confusing and annoying to the reader.
Overall, acronyms ordinarily used for conversational purposes should be confined
primarily to informal communications.
Some Basic Examples:
- spam--unsolicited email, the use of this
term comes from a Monty Python skit where a group began chanting "spam,
spam, spam, spam", drowning out all conversation.

- flame--antagonistic criticism
- IMHO--in my humble/honest opinion
- FYI--for your information
- BTW--by the way
- LOL--laughing out loud
- ROTFL--Rolling On The Floor Laughing
- FWIW--For What It's Worth
