Top Netiquette Tips for Newsgroups

When going a listserv...

You do not *have* to put your real name and e-mail address when it says subscribe "listserv your name".  The listserv program will automatically pick up your e-mail address.  You can just put SUBSCRIBE (list name) and leave out your real name.  Some listservs also have the option to "hide" you as a subscriber to the distribution list for that discussion group.  Send a message to LISTSERV@(host address) (where host address is the address of the computer which is hosting that discussion list).  In the body of the mail message, type only the word HELP to find out more about the commands on that system and possibly even the name of the person that maintains the listserv program.

Tips for Newsgroups

1.)  When you join list, file a printed copy of how to unsubscribe.

2.)  When you join a list, monitor the messages for a few days to get a feel for what common questions are asked and what topics are off-limits. When you are comfortable, start posting.

3.)  Always remember that e-mail going to discussion or Usenet groups might transcend global boundaries. Don't make geographical assumptions that people may not understand.  If you do, you may very well get a flood of mail from people asking for verification or corrections to your post.

4.)  If you can respond to someone else's questions, do so directly to their e-mail address as opposed to sending it to the entire discussion group.  Many in the group may not be interested in the answer.  If the person that asked the question is able to, they might want to post a summary to the group, after all the answers are sent to them.

5.)  Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.  Resist the temptation to "flame" others on a list.  You can lose access to the Internet ("mail bombing").

6.)  Be careful when replying to a message and check to see where the message address will be sent to.  Many people have been highly embarrassed by sending personal mail which they thought would go only to the originator of the e-mail message but actually got sent to all the members of the list.  *Never* reply to Listserv unless you want all to read.

7.)  USE UPPER CASE TO SHOUT.  Use *asterisks* around words to highlight a point and use underscores before and after a book's title to show you're describing a book, i.e. _The Wizard of Oz_. Use emoticons when you're trying to be funny.  :-)

8.)  If you go away for more than a week, unsubscribe or suspend mail from any mailing lists or listservs.
