Web addresses end with a set of letters that identify the type of site. These sets of letters are referred to as domain name suffixes. The domain name for Illinois State Univeristy (and Metcalf and U-High) is ilstu.edu. The domain name suffix for ISU is, thus, edu. This means that the web pages located at the domain ilstu.edu are of an educational institution, because that is what the domain name suffix edu stands for. Here are some common domain name suffixes:
.com (commercial) could mean that the page is sponsored by a commercial business usually to promote a product OR the page is news web page whose primary purpose is to provide current information.
.edu (education) means the site is sponsored by an educational institution.
.gov (government) means the site is sponsored by an agency of government
.org (organization) means the site is sponsored by an organization attempting to influence public opinion.
.uk (a server located in the United Kingdom) often website hosted outside of the United States have domain suffixes that denote the country of where the web server is located. For example, Germany is .de, .at, for Austria, and .fr for France.
Besides these suffixes, another way to determine information about the publishing source is if a tilde (~) is present in the web address. For example, http://www.ilstu.edu/~jitools/index.html, would be the site of a personal homepage, as a tilde is present in the address.
