Key parts of the ISU Appropriate Use Policy that faculty/staff have agreed to

8.2.1  Your Privacy

  • ISU will take reasonable steps to protect the privacy of your online actions, including the sending and receiving of email, and the sending and receiving of information over the internet.
  • You should be aware that information sent over the internet, or via email, is not guaranteed to be private.
  • Further, ISU reserves the right to examine your email, or other electronic communications if they believe you may have violated a state or federal law, or a university regulation.
  • Any files you send through the ISU network are subject to university rules.
  • Copies of your email may be saved onto backup tapes.

8.2.2   Violations of the Information Resource Access and Security Policy at Illinois State University include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Any act that compromises information resource security.

  • Intentional unauthorized access, use, destruction, alteration, dismantling, disfiguring, or disabling of any University information resource, including but not limited to intentional introduction of a virus.

  • The disclosure of secret or confidential information. This includes the sharing of passwords and leaving a terminal unattended while logged on such that unauthorized transactions could be submitted.

  • The use of data or other information resources for illicit purposes.

  • Unauthorized copying, storage or use of any software on any University computer in   violation of the software licensing agreement.

  • Unauthorized personal use of any software which has been purchased by, or developed for, the University and considered intellectual property of the University.  This policy applies regardless of the form or format of the software (or copies), and includes source code.

  • Unauthorized use of University information for financial gain or malicious purposes.   Suspected violations of the Information Resource Access and Security Policy should be directed to the Data Security Administrator, Julian Hall 101, phone 438-3611.

8.3   What happens if you use inappropriate behavior on-line

  • Level 1: You will receive a warning via email and postal mail informing you of the alleged violation and asking you to stop.

  • Level 2: If you continue to violate the AUP your accounts within the ISU system may be suspended.

  • Immediate Action: if the violation is considered severe, ISU can immediately suspend your account. A request for review form will then be sent to the AUP coordinator.

  • Noncompliance or violation of the Information Resource Access and Security Policy will result in revocation of the privilege to access information resources and may also include the following: suspension, termination, civil and/or criminal prosecution, and other disciplinary action, pursuant to all rules and regulations of Illinois State University and State and Federal Laws.

8.4  Potential criminal acts/threats

  • f you receive a threat the complaint will immediately be sent to the University Police.

8.4.3  Outside Authorities

  • ISU will provide local, state or federal officials full cooperation in investigating an alleged crime committed through the computer system.

8.4.4  Digital Millennium Copyright Act Compliance

  • ISU will evaluate all reports of copyright infringements. If there is a violation, the AUP Coordinator will follow the above procedures.

8.4.5   Electronic records

  • Inappropriate use of student academic information will be sent to the registrar for investigation.
